SOMATIC PRACTICE FAQ
What is somatics?
“Each and every identity is extended through a relationship with the Other.”
— Glissant, Poetics of Relation, 1997
Somatic practices can offer us a way to awaken fuller knowledge of the relational process of being human in the real world with others. By attuning us to the shifting and complex process of being alive, a somatic approach invites recognition that we are not separate from others or our environment.
What is BMC®?
Body-Mind Centering® is an approach to somatic practice that recognizes the body-mind relationship as integral and invites us to become more familiar and attuned to our ongoing experience of being human. We approach this process of attunement relationally through encountering the entry points of anatomical imagery, touch, movement, and sound.
What is an SME?
A Somatic Movement Educator (SME) has an experiential understanding of the practices, systems, and vocabularies from BMC® to support an embodied process of learning through the tools of anatomy, touch, movement, and sound. By facilitating from a grounding in their own somatic experience, an SME can offer students an empathetic environment to develop or deepen a relational awareness of their own human experience.
